An excellent early apple, grown commercially widely accross the world, and still available in many parts of Australia in local markets. Good sized fruit, when ripe the Gravenstein is red and green, with a orange-yellow stripe and ultra crisp. Sweet juicy crunchy flesh, it's destinct flavour signals the beginning of the apple season in earnest. Polishes well. Unfortunately in the commercial world they are often picked unripe in order to catch good early prices. Excellent eaten fresh but can be cooked and make a very pleasant cider too. Dont store for long as they are best eaten to make way for midseason apples.
Note this variety is also available on dwarfing rootstocks.
