Ziegler

"Introduced" in the 1950s by Frau Ziegler from Germany. This "Zwetschge" is a German prune, used for drying, pies, jams and preserves. They have a sharp rich nostalgic taste and ripen fairly late, here about March. Needs any other of our plums for pollination.

  • Ripening Time: February
  • Fertility: Needs a pollinator for itself, produces viable pollen
  • Growth Habit: Can be espaliered using the "fan" style only. Free standing tree grows to around 3 - 5m tall.
  • Rootstock: Non-dwarfing rootstock
  • Chill Tolerance: Normal chill
  • Pollination is far simpler than most people think. Generally, unless self fertile simply get 2 or more different varieties in the same group (eg pears) to ensure adequate pollination. A more comprehensive explanation can be found in our Pollination Guide
