Gravenstein

An excellent early apple, grown commercially widely across the world, and still available in many parts of Australia in local markets. Good sized fruit, when ripe the Gravenstein is red and green, with a orange-yellow stripe and ultra crisp. Sweet juicy crunchy flesh, it's distinct flavour signals the beginning of the apple season in earnest. Polishes well. Unfortunately in the commercial world they are often picked unripe in order to catch good early prices. Excellent eaten fresh but can be cooked and make a very pleasant cider too. Dont store for long as they are best eaten to make way for midseason apples.

  • Ripening Time: January - February
  • Fertility: Needs 2-3 pollinators, produces no viable pollen (triploid)
  • Growth Habit: Can be espaliered and kept to 1.5 - 2.5m. Free standing tree grows to around 2 -2.5m tall.
  • Rootstock: Dwarfing rootstock
  • Chill Tolerance: Normal chill
  • Pollination is far simpler than most people think. Generally, unless self fertile simply get 2 or more different varieties in the same group (eg pears) to ensure adequate pollination. A more comprehensive explanation can be found in our Pollination Guide
