QUINCES

The quince is closely related to the pear and is a fruit for cooking. Quinces are considered to have originated in central Asia with cold winters but warm to hot long summers. Quinces grow well in warm mediterranean climates and Australia too. The fruit are wonderfully aromatic when mature and treasured for making jams, preserves and jellies.

We actually hold the official Australian collection of 16 varieties of Quince.

Quinces should be trained to a standard of about 1m ie. a trunk 1m tall before the branches form and all suckers scrupulously removed (quinces. tend to sucker). Otherwise they require little pruning other than removing crossed branches and an annual pyrethrum spray against cherry slug in late summer. They are considered self fertile, but having a second variety nearby may increase fruit yield.

All quince trees on this page are $26 each (inc. GST) are grafted on dwarfing quince rootstock.
