All it takes is one event to damage the tree of wipe out fruit that are about to ripen. It happens to most people sooner or later, so if you feel immune from wallaby / possum / parrot problems...... - just you wait!
If you make provisions before hand you'll be far better off than throwing up improvised galvanized iron, chicken wire or shade cloth barriers that don't do a good job and scar the landscape. For us it's been a bitter but salutary lesson, hard learned, but we've sort of managed it.
Espaliering your trees allows you to cover them with netting preventing bird strike. A fence around the orchard with various floppy top and electric combination depending on how many wallabies and possums there are. Beware of branches that lean over the fence and the corner post and gates that usually get breached first. Otherwise a dog that keeps them at bay can help too, - it would be sad for you to see your hard work and investment devoured by the wildlife. |
