HAZELNUTS, ALMOND and MEDLAR

HAZELNUT PACK
Our hazelnuts come in a pack of 10 advanced suckers, containing a mixture of varieties to afford the best chance of pollination and bearing nuts. We are including 4  American White, 2 Wanliss Pride, 2 Cossford, and 2 Barcelona. $120 for 10 trees.

Hazelnuts should be planted about 2-3 metres apart and will eventually grow into each other forming a dense hedge. Mix up the varieties for good pollination and set up irrigation lines - 2 Litre per hour drippers should do. They need good care and attention with water and fertilizer for the first 2 years and often are a bit slow to get going, but once established they are tough and relatively trouble free. The nuts fall off during March. Keep the bushes pruned up so you can easily get in there under them to pick up the crop.

One pack is $120 for of 10 plants. For purposes of packaging and postage, these count as a total of 10 trees.
Some loose ones left: Barcelona, American White $12 each.

ALMONDS
This sweet flavoursome soft shelled almond is self-fertile, producing a tree about 3m high. A most attractive tree covered in single white flowers just as the leaves emerge in spring. It likes it hot in summer, but well drained soil and enough watering during the summer growth. It needs some winter chill to pollinate. Expect fruiting to start after 3-5 years after which it bears heavily. Ripen during late February - May. $26.

MEDLAR
A small tree closely related to the quince with unique small fruits a bit like oversized rosehips that are eatable rather then edible. There is lots of discussion about this, but really it’s for it’s beauty that most people grow it. It has a unique twisted shape and very ornamental leaves which overlap to form a canopy. Forms a small tree with beautiful large single white flowers in spring. $26.
