GRAFTING and ROOTSTOCKS

CUSTOM GRAFTING. We are able to graft (minimum 2) a particular variety for you and grow it for a year. $30 each for a one year old tree, or $24 for a graftling (you will need to grow this on yourself in nursery conditions). Email us for details.

CONTRACT GROWING: We’re happy to grow larger numbers (>10) of your preferred variety and rootstock from our library of varieties. We only graft in multiples of 10. We require a deposit in advance and orders way before winter so we can source the appropriate number of rootstocks. If you need graftlings, we will ship them as graftlings for planting in late winter ready for spring planting. Otherwise we will grow them for you for a year and ship them the following winter. Enquire for pricing.

ROOTSTOCKS.

A rootstock is an variety selected especially for it's disease resistance, health and vigor. They are grown in stool beds and are harvested from suckering up, so end up genetically identical to each other. They dont produce fruit of any quality, but when grafted with a good scion wood (a piece cut from another tree of a known variety) it acts as a supporting stem and root system for that variety to grow. The final tree size is influenced by the dwafing nature of the rootstock and the vigor of each individual variety.

For espaliering: M26 dwarfing rootstock (apple) and dwarfing quince will both grow to 2-2.5m high. Colt cherry rootstocks can be kept low on espaliers to 2-2.5m. M27 apple rootstock (used for step over hedge) can be kept to 0.5m. Plums on Myrobalan rootstock can be grown in a fan shape and kept below 2m.

For free standing trees: Semi-dwarfing apple M106 will grow 3-4m, while Myrobalan rootstock (plum, apricot and nectarine) will grow at least to 3m and easily up to 5m high depending on your pruning style. Colt cherry rootstock will grow to 4m or taller depending on pruning.
